Activities in and around Brecon
The range of activities that are available in and around Brecon provides something to suit all ages and abilities. Indoor activities from swimming to indoor bowls are provided by the Leisure Centre. Outdoor activities on land, water and in the air are available throughout the year and are within easy reach of the town. Sailing, canoeing, canal boat trips, windsurfing and fishing on the Usk and Wye rivers are just a few water based activities. Mountain walks, biking, horse riding, mountaineering , geology and natural history takes you into the spectacular countryside of the Brecon Beacons National Park, recently awarded “Geo Park” status, where the diverse terrain, rock formation, caving and wildlife provides another source of interest for local residents and visitors alike. Sporting activities include golf at the Brecon Town or Cradoc courses , outdoor bowls, tennis, cricket, football, rugby, athletics and many more. Leisurely walks around the town include an eco trail, riverside paths, the Promenade, canal towpath and Priory Groves. When the weather is favourable you can take to the air in a glider, micro light or hang glider and see the Black Mountains just north of the town.
Entertainment in the evenings can be found in our Theatre and Cinema both of which provide something to suit all tastes. Indoor markets are held each Tuesday and Friday with a Farmer’s market every other month. Dine out at one of several restaurants and pubs in and around the town and sample a wide variety of menus. The many hotels, pubs and guest houses in town provide comfortable, reasonably priced accommodation to cater for all. Art galleries and exhibitions feature local and visiting artists, authors, poets and crafts of all types. The annual Jazz festival, in August, attracts music lovers from all over the work to hear top performers. There are many interesting places of worship for most denominations located in the town. The Cathedral has an extensive choral and music calendar.
Brecon also provides visitors with a convenient location from which to explore Mid, South and West Wales being just a short journey by bus or car from the major towns and centres of interest.
